This week has two activities plus a social informal
and construction evening for others.
It's
the first of our Contest Workshops designed to show beginners at
contesting what you need to do - a useful contesting guide will also be
supplied.
For our younger members its Bright Sparks who will
continue to build their NARC Smart Light - multicolour LED light for
their bedrooms.
Congratulations
to our 5 new licensed amateurs who completed their course and passed
their exam at DCP in Great Ellingham last Sunday. Thanks and well done
also to all those instructors and members who helped with the training
and practical assessments.
The RSGB have
identified that quite a few people who pass their Foundation Exam do
not actually get on air and for some at least it may be that they need
extra help with the practical aspects of setting up a station and the
confidence of going on the air for the first time on their own.
As
winners of the 2009 Kenwood Trophy for outstanding contribution to
training, the RSGB asked Norfolk Amateur Radio Club to look at
developing a 'mentoring' initiative which, if successful, could be
adopted by other clubs nationwide. So for the first time we are
piloting our new 'Radio Buddy' scheme with our new amateurs, where each
new licencee is assigned an 'Buddy' from within the club with a special contact card who will help get them on the air and put them in touch with
other amateurs with similar interests. Whilst their is never an
obligation to join NARC for a course, the club will also offer all
newcomers 3 months free membership to help them get started.
We
will let you know how the buddy scheme goes, meantime if you are a NARC
member and would like to be an Buddy for future new licencees, please
send your name, address and contact details together with a few words
about your particular interest in radio and a 'head and shoulders'
digital picture of yourself (smiling!) to David G7URP who will make
this up into a Radio Buddy card to use for future courses.
The picture shows new amateurs Hannah, Lorna, Trevor, Sean and William
after receiving their results.
The
Society has learned
with great sadness that Rowley Shears BEM, G8KW, passed away on Tuesday
17
November 2009. Responsible for re-introducing amateur radio into Germany
after
the second world war, he was perhaps best known for his KW range of
amateur
equipment from the 1950s to the 1970s. Through KW Electronics and the
KW2000
transceiver, he was largely responsible for popularising SSB in the
British
amateur community. Rowley passed away peacefully at the ripe old age of
90.
If this
model number means anything to you then you may be able to help. An
amateur in France is restoring some old WW2 gear which he hopes to
display at a commemorative day next year and is just looking for a
couple of bits to complete his T1154 - a valve cover plate and an outer
case. Can you help or know someone who could? He will be happy to pay
for the items and the postage.
